Celebrating the Life of

Detroit, MI

A Life Well Lived

Today, we are Celebrating the Life of Otis Carter! He was the last born to the union of Henry Clayton Carter I and Lenora Butler on January 19, 1926, in Detroit, Michigan. Preceding him in death were his siblings Walter King, Arnita Green, Henry Clayton Carter II, and Orville Carter. He was born on Moore Street in Detroit which was very close in distance to Tabernacle Baptist Church where he became a member for over 80 years until God called him home. The Carter family moved to Vancourt Street where he attended Sampson Elementary.

Education

Otis continued his education at Northwestern High School until the 10th grade.  He decided to serve his country and join the United States Navy in January of 1942 on the USS Casablanca during WWII until his honorable discharge in November 1945.  Otis arrived home in Detroit dressed in a Class A uniform with a ribbon and a couple of stars. He was a proud veteran sharing his experiences with any listeners.  After his service, he began working, landing a job at the United States Post Office Strathmoor Station for seven years.

Family

In 1947, Otis met the love of his life, Dorothy Charlene Jones (preceded him). Through their union seven children were born; Pamela Lenora Carter (preceded him), Michael A. Carter, Sr., Patricia D. Brackett, Paula J. Carter-Bunch, Peggy E. Carter, Mark C. Carter, and Marvin K. Carter (preceded him).

Otis was an outstanding provider for his family! Seven children demanded substantial income and he frequently worked two jobs.  He spent fifteen years working for the Detroit Public Schools at Durfee Middle School, and also at the Ford Motor Company retiring after thirty years.

His Legacy

Otis loved playing cards (bid whist), reading books was a passion particularly war stories and mysteries.  He would read 20-25 books by the end of the month, Tom Clancy stories were one of his favorites.  He was a dedicated University of Michigan football fan and singing in the choir at Tabernacle Baptist Church.

Although his education was shortened, Otis was a very intelligent man that had a contagious smile and charismatic personality. He was a great storyteller, comedian and a stickler of time management had a gentleman like demeanor and believed that men should always dress impeccably. Otis accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior very early in life and PRAYED every day. He was a dedicated sponsor/speaker for AA (Alcoholic Anonymous) encouraging persons with addictions lecturing “one day at a time.” He was proud and patriotic. He felt blessed to have lived long enough to witness a Black Man serve as President of The United States of America! Dad used to joke that he will never live long enough to see those sorry Detroit Lion’s win a Super Bowl.

Otis loved family gatherings and especially with his children.  His eyes would dazzle when he was in the presence of his grandchildren! Otis considered his life fulfilled.

Otis Carter leaves to cherish his memory, one sister; Eleanor Andrews, two sons, Michael A. (Pamela Lynn) and Mark C. (Carolyn); three daughters, Patricia D. Brackett (Clinton), Paula J. and Peggy E. and twelve loving grandchildren; Paulette, Charles I, Michael II, Robert Johnson (Lauren), Marcia), Marcya, (Jamal), Paul, Mark II, Somalia Blackmon (Forman), Martin, Paris, Brianna and Malcolm. Otis will also be missed by fourteen great grandchildren; Deondre, Ameena, Ephrain, Charles II, Tariq, Ali, Bralen, Michael III, Juliana, Miles, Maximilian, Logan, Paige, Somalia II, many nieces, nephews, friends, residents at 8330 E. Jefferson and neighbors.

REST IN HEAVEN OTIS CARTER
